It comes as no surprise that Ireland is known as “The Emerald Isle”, with a total of over four hundred golf courses in the country, offering some of the finest golf played in western Europe or – dare we say it – the world. However, it is not just the selection of world renowned courses to choose from that make Ireland a golfer’s paradise; what really gives golf that extra quality is the relaxed and unceremonious approach to the game, making golfing in Ireland a unique experience.

Golfing regions in Ireland

The South West (Cork, Kerry and Clare) is a must for all those who wish to experience the best Irish golf has to offer, coastal golf like you have never seen anywhere else in the world – breathtaking scenery, coupled with beautifully laid out courses that take advantage of the rugged coastline to give the game a truly dramatic feel. Several parkland courses lie a little further inland, offering a choice for the discerning golfer.

The West and North West regions (Galway, Mayo, Sligo and Donegal) are a links golfer’s paradise. From Galway in the west, all the way to Ballyliffen in the very north of the country, you can enjoy links and parkland settings in locations of unparalleled beauty.

Travelling to Northern Ireland (Derry, Antrim, Down) coastal settings dominate, with parkland golf on offer, from Castlerock Golf Club on the northern coast to Ardglass on the eastern coast.

Further down, the east coast (Dublin, Kildare & Louth) features some of the best courses that the country has to offer, two of them being Portmarnock (which has been the venue for a total of 15 Irish Opens, the Walker cup and the Canada Cup) and Druid’s Glen (venue for the 1996 Murphy’ s Irish Open).

The South East region (Kilkenny, Kildare & Wicklow) plays host to many fine courses, one being one of the most famous courses in the world – the K Club in County Kildare, host of the 2006 Ryder Cup between Europe and America, as well as 11 European Opens.
